Rovers!

AFC Balham 2 – 2 Rovers

It was quite a ride on Sunday where we came up against a really good AFC Balham in the fight to be called Champions. My

We veered from the depths of despair to the ecstasy of a spectacular equalizer and almost clinching the league title. All within the final 20 minutes.

We started the match in our usual form. We were a touch nervous and perhaps a bit rushed at times but we did create a number of chances which we weren’t able to take.

It was therefore slightly against the run of play when AFC Balham went ahead on 30 minutes. A freekick from about 30 yards was parried by Pybus at the near post and a Balham attacker nipped in to tuck the ball home from close range.

Zac was having a fine game at right wing, having originally started at No.10. A fizzing bundle of skill and energy. He equalized with a low shot between the goalkeeper’s legs from just inside the box on 40 minutes.

Half time came at the right time for us and we were able to regroup, calm down and we began the 2nd half with our more usual patterns of play. We carved out many more opportunities and really got a foot hold in the game such that I thought we’d not only win the game, but win it well.

We did however suffer a calamity when AFC Balham went ahead on 70 minutes. A long looping ball into the box was headed back towards Pybus by James Lambert. The ball bounced and before Pybus could scoop up, an AFC Balham midfielder nipped in and slid the ball in at the near post.

I feared the worst as AFC Balham dropped deep and got men behind the ball. It was then only going to be a sublime finish which got us back on level terms. And bl0000000dy hell it ws.

Seb scooted down the left hand side after picking the ball up just over the halfway line. He jinked in on his right foot across a couple of players and b0llocked the ball into the far right hand corner. Queue the absolute pandemonium that the quality and importance of the goal deserved.

The final 7 mins saw us push for the winner and almost seal it but strikes from Shaf, Zac, Pete and Seb were denied.

Sheva has put together a fabulous clip reel of the day’s action.

MOM : Zac was a constant torment throughout and was a deserved winner of the MOM.

Once more into the breach dear friends. Win and we’ve done it. Draw or lose and we have to rely on results elsewhere to clinch it.

South West Rangers are a decent side who from their results appear to be ‘At It’ or not. They’ve beaten AFC Balham 7-2 and lost 8-0 to AFC Putney.

They are also 2nd in the form table behind ourselves presently also.

Let’s therefore not take any chances, assume they will be up for it and get the 3 points to see out the season in style.
