Match Report - 17 Oct 2021, Clapham Rovers Clapham Rovers beat Westminster Wanderers
Westminster Wanderers 3 – 4 Rovers
“YOU’VE GOT TO DIE TO GET 3 POINTS”
Neil Warnock, The Greatest Manager of All Time in the documentary ‘WARNOCK.’ 2004/05
Sometimes you do have to die to get 3 points and there were 12 lads out there dying for the win. In honour of that documentary, I’ve allotted the most appropriate Sheffield Utd squad names from that halcyon season to each player from the day.
Pybus – Paddy Kenny
Zac – Rob Kozluk
Alex Lambert – Phil Jagielka
G - Chris Morgan
Gaffer – Alan Wright
Shaf – Stephen Quinn
Danny Cain – Nick Montgomery
Tom Howes – Stuart McCall
Tim Louis – Barry Hayles
John O’Rourke - Ashley Ward
Lewis Vyse – Danny Webber
I looked around that side during many points of the game and was completely blown away at the mentality and the will to win shown. No one can beat when we want it that much, no one. Somewhere, Neil Warnock must’ve been lurking in a bush with his trousers down.
1-0 The Rovers go behind inside 5 mins with a Ronaldinho (vs Brazil in 2002) esque cross –cum-shot which sailed over Pybus into the top corner and was a complete fluke. 5 mins
1-1 Shaf put in the first of a serious of fine set pieces on the day. Zac Hughes rose highest to nod home at the far post. 20 mins
1-2 Another quality set piece from Shaf from a corner was met by Tim Louis. The keeper made an unbelievable save to keep it out but Zac was there to stab home for his second of the game. Before the goal, John O’Rourke making his debut after a deadline day transfer from Gumtree almost scored a 45 yard screamer, a first time half volley, which the keeper did unbelieveably well to tip over the bar. 35 mins
1-3 Straight from the kick off at half time, Shaf turns his right back (the starting right back had been substituted at HT) heads towards the edge of the box and beats the keeper at his near post from the edge of the box. 45 mins and 10 seconds.
2-3 Westminster Wanderers come back into it by putting us under serious pressure. They score the ‘Spongiest Goal Ever’ after we fail to clear it 12 times and it’s rammed home from 3 yards after a dreadful deflection. 60 mins
3-3 Still under pressure, we concede a dodgy pen. Zac Hughes goes for a diving header, the ball deflects down off his head and goes onto his hand. Westminster dispatch the pen. 65mins
4-3 We dust ourselves down and Shaf bags another for the day. He’s in acres of spaces and receives a perfect through ball to run in and chip over the keeper.
The 4th seems to knock the stuffing out of WW somewhat but we still put our bodies on the line to secure the win.
MOM Shaf and Tom Howes share the MOM spoils. Shaf was Stephen Quinn at his pomp down the wing and Tom Howes was the metronomic Stuart McCall in central midfield.

No highlights here just some general play. A mindless punt from me somewhere.
