Match Report - 22 Sep 2019, Clapham Rovers Clapham Rovers beat Groundhoppers

Rovers!

ROVERS 2 – 0 Groundhoppers

Well if ever there was a performance which embodies Clapham Rovers and the reason why we get up at silly o’clock on a Sunday for the love of the game, that was It.

On a bobbly uneven pitch, in a crosswind and latterly driving rain and with a patched up defence, we beat the holders of the Sunday Challenge Trophy in the 1st Round. A side that had beaten AFC Hammersmith in the final no less than 5 months previously.

Groundhoppers had 75% of the ball and we had our share of luck with 2 shots off the post, a clearance off the line and fine Pybus saves but you couldn’t deny the sheer shift we put in from 1-13, the determination we showed to win and quality when it mattered when we went 1-0 up.

That is why I play for Clapham Rovers and it is a result which will live long in the memory.

It was somewhat against the run of play when we went 1-0 around 35 minutes. Shaff streaked off from just inside his own half past about 5 players and cut the ball back from the byline to onrushing Milby who tucked home with ease.

Up until that point Groundhoppers had hit the post with a curling dipping shot from outside the area which clipped the post and came out. Their play had been characterised by some neat 1-2s to break from midfield whilst we looked to compete all over the pitch and nulify this threat with some touch tackling and making the use of Seb and Shaf on the wings when we looked to break quickly.

Our second half performance mirrored the first as we continued to put in maximum effort to protect the goal from the penetrative Groundhoppers play while hoping to catch them on the break when we had the chance.

After Groundhoppers had hit the post once again, they threatened to score in a goalmouth scramble which saw yours truly block a shot with my stomach and them Godders clear the a rebound off the line.

We sealed the win on a rare break as the immense Timbo take the ball down of the halfway line, skin 2 defenders before being upended in the box as he got his shot off. G took the resultant penalty to exercise the demons of the miss from last week.

We still had 10 minutes to see out at 2-0 and we did with the sheer effort we showed in the previous 80 mins.

MOM. Everyone deserves a mentions in dispatches but Shaun McKee takes the spoils for a vocal and heroic performance in the middle.

Sunday 29th September Fixture

After Sunday’s brilliant performance, let’s give this season some lift off with a win against Tooting Celtic. As Champions of last year’s Championship they’ve obviously had a tough start to life in the Prem. Like us back then, they’ve probably found it a bit of a rude awakening. We therefore need to build on our hard won experience at this level and combine It with the quality we have in the side. Tooting Celtic will certainly make it hard for us and compete from the off.
