It wasn’t pretty but we were disciplined, kept our shape, took our chance, showed some defensive steel and almost took the match into extra time. It was also fun, an ingredient I think has gone out the games in the last few weeks. Let’s add the steel to the attacking finesse we have and we’ll pick up some better results from here on in.
Enfield proved to be the quite the trek but the pitches and changies were decent. Phoenix were also a pleasure to play against. They were decent lads and stroked the ball around nicely without any aggressive edge. I was just beginning to think that they had no killer instinct, circa Arsenal of the late Wenger years when their skipper looped and curled the ball into the far corner of the net from the edge of the box.
We went in at 1-0 down knowing that we were still well in the game and such it was proved. With 10 mins to go we scored the equaliser. Al received the ball from Sharpy, jinked around a few men and struck the ball from the edge of the box into the left hand corner of the net. The ball bouncing over the keeper’s hand as he dived.
Sadly our lack of subs in a roll on roll off game proved our undoing as Phoenix chucked on several decent subs who proved the difference as we tired. A decent left footed strike from the edge of the box sealed the game for Phoenix in the dying seconds. Sending Pybus up for a last gasp free kick caused chaos in their box but we couldn’t see it home.
All told a really enjoyable game to watch and play in on a fine and sunny November afternoon.
