Match Report
Match Report - 08 Oct 2017, Clapham Rovers Clapham Rovers drew with West London Select
Rovers!
Rovers 1 – 1 WLS
To the following we can add Sunday’s result. When a draw feels like a win.
Italy 0 - England 0, 11 October 1997
England v Australia, Fifth Ashes Test, September 2005
England 2 - Greece 2, Old Trafford, 5 October 2001
Germany 4, Allies 4, Escape to Victory
After injuries to Nath, Shaun and Nicou we showed incredible spirit and SHAPE! to not only hold WLS with 9 men but also give them plenty of food for thought at the other end of the pitch. Indeed we nearly nicked it to win 2-1 in what would have been the biggest injustice since my access to Jennifer Lawrence’s private nude pics were blocked by Virgin Media.
WLS started the game with the most intent and pinged the ball around nicely on a decent surface; our first game at home this season. Their number 8 was finding decent pockets of space in between the midfield lines and we struggled to get the ball down and play.
The Skipper was the first to depart the action with a twisted ankle and Nicou came on at right wing with Cliff coming into centre midfield. Shaun was playing at number 10 with Tim upfront and we did our best to get them into the play but we spent the majority of the first half on the back foot and Shaun not far off our back four.
The first half played out with occasional Rovers attacks while we restricted WLS to shots from outside the box after decent approach play.
WLS were ahead almost immediately in the second half. A great ball over the top cut out Des and allowed a WLS attacker to nip in and loop the ball over the advancing Sheva.
WLS are a decent side to come back against and our task was made all the more difficult when Nicou had to go off with an ankle injury from the first half exacerbated by being caught in a tackle in the second. With no subs on the bench, this took us down to 10 men.
Kevin and Perry Go Large, I mean, Tim and Seb, got us back into the game at 1-1. WLS were playing around at the back and Tim managed to dispossess their centre back. Seb nipped in, took around a couple and squared it across to Tim who had the simple task of sliding it in.
Tim was then denied a second with a fine sliding tackle with the goal at his mercy after a now trademark run from Seb saw him run the length of the pitch skin 14 players and square it across to him. I was ably in support of Seb being 70 yards away, the closest I had been to him all morning.
Shaun then departed the action with a knee injury which saw us go down to nine men. Chasing a through ball, he found himself in a 5050 challenge with the keeper and came off worse.
With great determination, skill, SHAPE and passion, we were able to see out the last 20 mins where everyone put an incredible shift in a 4-4-0 which would’ve had Craig Levein salivating.
Everyone involved should be incredibly proud of themselves for putting in such a shift to save the draw and a game which will live long in the memory. Let’s keep it up!
MOM. Seb for his lung bursting runs which gave us a chance at 0-1 and 1-1.
Mentions also must be made in dispatches regarding WLS for their fine sportsmanship throughout and a superb refereeing performance.
THERE IS NO GAME ON SUNDAY. ALL PREVIOUSLY AVAILABLE OPPOSITION ARE PLAYING IN THE CUP. I HAVE NOT FOUND OPPOISITION TO PLAY IN A FRIENDLY.
CONSIDERING THE INJURIES, I THINK IT ALSO PRUDENT THAT WE HAVE A REST SO AS NOT TO GET ANY MORE!
WE ARE NEXT BACK IN ACTION ON SUNDAY 22ND NOVEMBER.
