Match Report - 13 Mar 2016, Clapham Rovers Clapham Rovers beat London Titans
Rovers!
Tough game vs Chelsea Town coming up this Sunday. Conflicting rumours abound about whether they’re decent or 5hit. Let’s just prepare to be faced with a decent side and a tough match. If our preparation is right we can’t lose.
Rovers 4 -2 London Titans
Disgraceful, inept, slow, over the hill, woeful, dreadful.....that’s my performance described...now let’s describe the rest of Sunday’s action.
Following a rather large Friday night at an Elephant & Castle Bowling Alley and a Soho Gay Bar I could sense the lethargy in the air prematch. In hindsight, Elton John’s Rocket Man was not a particularly uplifting dressing room tune either. I was therefore extraordinarily delighted to take home 3 points against an improving side who have the touch of the ASBs about them. Not particularly talented but obstinate, awkward and tough to break down. It was also with great pleasure we welcomed back Charlie Cook following a 5 year sojourn in Australia. Charlie being a regular from the dark days where we would often get hammered by a team like London Titans.
The Ref did us a massive favour in the 1st half by disallowing a London Titans opener following a slow start. The corner was swung in, Pybus jumped but couldn’t reach it, and the ball was nodded in by G under pressure from a London Titans attacker who spent the match seeing how far and often he could chest the ball out of play. There didn’t seem much wrong with the OG but thankfully the Ref disallowed it for a push.
We took advantage of this good fortune when Shaun scored the opener shortly after. A Milby free kick from the left hand side of the box caught the keeper napping at the far post. He appeared to believe the shot was going wide but it rebounded off the far post, span along the goal line and Shaun belied the Friday night session to poke the ball home.
The Ref then became centre of attention again with some bizarre decisions. First he gave a free kick for hand ball outside the box when the offence was committed at least 5 yards inside it. Following an unsuccessful free kick he then gave a pen when Smudger was cleanly tackled about 45 seconds later. Milby stepped up and dispatched the pen, in off the right post. 2-0.
Half time came and Charlie had to go off with an injury. J5B came on and we switched to a 442. London Titans then pegged us back by exposing our brittleness from corners once more. A corner was drilled into the near post and a LGBTitan forced it in.
Thankfully we showed out quality by restoring our 2 goal condition almost immediately. A cross from Milby flew into the net from the right hand side of the pitch. Smudger was there to follow up in case.
By this point we had reverted to a 352. Moley was having great joy down the right hand side as wing back and got forward with ease. We looked well on top and could have gone up several notches if so required. It was therefore no surprise when we went 4-1 up. A long booming ball into the box was met on his head by Shaun. As it was slightly behind him he had to nod it up into the air with all the skill of a prize circus walrus. His next touch was again on his bonce and he looped the ball over the keeper in the far corner of the net.
LGBTitans did pull a goal back with a ball oddly clipped into the far corner of the net with 5 minutes to go but the game was well won by then.
MOM. Moley aka Cafu was got the nod for his incessant flying runs down the wing and crosses into the box.
