Match Report - 06 Mar 2016, Clapham Rovers Clapham Rovers drew with London St George
Rovers!
Sunday’s match sees us come up against the vastly improving London Titans. They will give us a tough match but it is one we should win. If we approach the match with the same determination as we did against LSG and throw in a bit more quality football, we shouldn’t have too many problems.
Rovers 1 – 1 London St George
We finally took a point off London St George at the 5th time of asking (4 league games and 1 friendly,) in a game where I felt we just ran out of time to gain the win. London St George had a first half penalty save though so I was still delighted with the draw.
The match was played on the unfamiliar pitch No.1 with us going up in the hill in first half with the wind in our faces. Coupled with London St George playing most of the football, this meant that we spent a large majority of the first 45 minutes under the cosh and struggling to get out of our half. On the rare occasions we broke out of our half either by playing some tiki taka, Smudger bustling his way through or making the most of set pieces, we looked like we would take the lead. Smudger had a shot saved at the near post by the keeper, Bunny had found himself free at the back from a corner but could only steer his half volley wide and Shaun’s Harry Kane esque shot lacked the requisite power.
LSG had a penalty saved by Archie on his 2nd appearance of the season following Horse’s foul. An LSG attacker broke into the box and with Horse going across to make a challenge, Horse realised he wasn’t going to make it and pulled out. Unfortunately, Horse’s chest made contact with the LSG player’s shoulder and the attacker went down. Archie guessed right from the pen, by diving to his right, and made a wonderful save to keep the scores level.
Sadly we went behind just before half time as our inability to deal with set pieces reared it’s ugly head in a similar manner to the ASB match. A decent corner was swung in, the ball ping ponged around and was rammed in by a lurking LSG player.
The second half saw us going downhill with the wind and this tipped the balance in our favour in a finely balanced match. We still struggled to play any consistent football but our determination kept us in it as we used Tony Pulis tactics to make the most of set pieces, throw ins and territory. London St George still threatened with the off breakaway but Archie dealt with the few shots that were on target.
Before we equalised, Horse had a fine chance to draw us level. Tony Pulis would have been stood on the sideline crying proud tears of joy as we put G, Horse and Carswell up for a corner. The ball was lobbed in and then cleared before Matt Wright used the up ‘n’ under to hooik it back in. J5 was unable to get much power on a shot as it bobbled around, it got cleared and Horse tried to squeeze it in but the ball dribbled wide.
Our equalizer deservedly arrived when a beautiful long ball over the top from Toby on the right hand side of midfield set Smudger off in a foot race vs the LSG right back towards goal. Their keeper had left his line to come and meet it but was unconvincing in his attempts. Smudger met the ball first with his head and nodded it over the keeper’s outstretched hands and into the net.
In my mind there was only one winner but we didn’t have much time left. We huffed and puffed with more set pieces and crosses into the box but couldn’t get the winner. As the final whistle blew we were still happy with the point.
MOM. Surprisingly, it was me. Despite my comical, kamikaze handball in the 2nd half.
