Match Report - 15 Nov 2015, Clapham Rovers Clapham Rovers beat Cool Oak Rangers

Rovers!
….and we’re back in the room. It was wonderful to see us finally play with some attacking verve again. We looked dangerous every time we went forward and played some lovely football at times. Once again we looked like the Rovers we can be rather than the disjointed imposters we’d been in the last few weeks. Let’s take that into Sunday’s fixture vs Invictus. A side we should beat but who dumped us out the cup on pens last time out.
Rovers 8 – 4 Cool Oak Rangers
Now this match had enough goal mouth incident for 6 matches so I will do my best to string it together into a coherent match report. At the very least consider it a stream of footballing consciousness.
If truth be told, we all actually thought the final score was 7-4 with the Ref having added another on there somewhere. Still, we’ll take it.
Cool Oak threatened to go 1-0 up almost straight from kick off after the ball bobbled around in the box and their attacker back heeled with venom towards goal. Dan, making his debut made a really smart stop to prevent the ball from sneaking over the line. What an introduction by Dan.
We went 1-0 up from a penalty. SMC was scythed down in the box having broke free from their centre back for a blatant pen. Their player had the cheek to claim it wasn’t a pen but the Ref was having none of it and Milby dispatched it with the minimum of fuss.
Almost immediately Horse then almost scored a thunderbasterd of an own goal. The cross came in from their right and Horse in stretching to cut out the cross, could only divert the ball with serious pace onto the angle of post and bar. Thankfully the ball rebounding somewhere near Peru and the danger was averted.
Right up at the other end we carved open CORs and the ball was worked over to SMC with an open goal. Sadly he could only Godwin-Scoop (Trademark 2015) the ball onto the bar. Following up on the rebound, he could only find the keeper.
Horse then also had a Chris Iwelumo moment where a free header at the back post could only be nodded over the bar.
We did however concede a short while later from almost a carbon copy of a goal from last week. In trying to clear the ball, Carswell could only find a Cool Oak Ranger charging the ball down. The ball hit the COR’s shins and span in a perfect arc around Dan in goal and into the corner of the net.
Our 2nd was a bit of a beaut. From an attack down their right the ball was cut back to Smudge who powered the ball into the net. The keeper had no chance and appeared to dive after the ball had gone in.
Horse scored our 3rd when a lovely curling free kick from Nick of Down Under, Clapham North and the Radiography department of Woolwich Hospital, found the big man free to force in at the far post. Nick was making an impressive debut and by taking the spot just in behind SMC, forced Milby to run up and down the left wing for the first time since 2005.
We then had 2 further penalties denied with SMC being cleared out on 2 further occasions for 2 blatant penalties. Both were waved away and both were accompanied by a milieu of West Country abuse from Milby on the left hand side of the 4-2-3-1.
Our fourth goal was bagged by the skipper in the second half with a lovely lashed left footed effort from the edge of the box into the bottom left hand corner. It was much the same as Smudger’s in the 1st half.
This goal did kick off an annoying period where everytime we scored, CORs came back and scored another to make the game closer than it should’ve been.
In between goals from Smudger and SMC, COR bundled the ball over the line from a corner, scored a Van Persie esque header vs Spain and got given a really soft pen when the ball was hammered at Carswell’s arms from 5 yards.
J5B also came on for a virtuoso performance where he nearly bagged 2 from out of the ether. Both were first time efforts catching the keeper off guard and both were inches from going in. One left foot, one right foot. G’wan J5.
Somewhere in the frantic 2nd half Smudger completed his hat trick with another and the ref gave us another goal. Seeing Smudger bearing down on goal with a defender in hot pursuit is one of my favourite Rovers sights. Yes, that is a g@y statement but it was wonderful to have Smudge back doing that on Sunday. He must’ve been in at least 8 1-1 foot races with a defender on Sunday and I’d forgotten what a sight it is and how must I’ve missed it. The cheque is in the post, Smudge.
We also had the luxury of missing another penalty as the Rovers hoodoo continues. SMC consigning himself down the pecking order with another x.
However, all in all, it was a really enjoyable game of football and I’d take the same performance every week.
MOM. Smudger. An absolute menace.
