Match Report - 13 Sep 2015, Clapham Rovers Clapham Rovers beat Real Northern 'A'

Rovers!

And so it begins. Great to start the season with a W when in previous years we’ve stuttered to a draw or thumping defeat.

This week sees us take on the LGBT friendly London Titans. Let’s continue where we left off, be positive in our play and not let London Titans force us into ahem, backs against the wall performance.

I am away so the Bunman will be taking the side in my absence.

ROVERS 2 – 1 Real Northern A

T’was a fine morning as we kick off the season vs the auld enemy, Real Northern A. We’ve had the upper hand against them of late but Real Northern are like a urinary tract infection, there’s always the potential for a sting in the tail. John Lennon’s Spanish lovechild was referee and he blew the whistle with a resounding ‘Qqqqqueeee’ to start the match.

The match began like a rabid Spanish bull with a frenetic start. The tempo meant that both sides struggled to play some cohesive football and there was a tendency from both sides to get the ball forward quickly when a couple more passes would’ve been more advantageous. We created the most clear cut chances throughout the first half though and it was no surprise when we took the lead.

Now, I do have a tendency in my match reports to make up my goal descriptions after a snazzy Sunday but this time I have a better excuse. I didn’t see our opening goal of the 2015/16 season because I was looking at the adjacent pitch trying to work out whether the left back turning out for Club Lixus was ‘Messi’ from FC Schlep. It was btw. Matt’s goal was a peach of a diving header after the ball and been lobbed into the box and pinged around. I think it was anyway. On a serious note, lovely to see a midfielder get on the scoresheet for a change. This season we will need to spread the goals around the side a bit more.

The chat at half time was about maintaining the lead and trying to be a bit more patient in our play. For the most part of the next 30 minutes we did so and it paid off on 65 minutes with a goal from Godders. It was a lovely flicked finish under the keeper as he sprung the offside trap. An absolute joy to behold and at that point I only saw us getting a few more.

In actual fact we then experienced the sting in the tail as Real Northern put us under pressure and the game got a bit scrappy. Horse cleared a shot over the bar in the 6 yard box with 5 Real Northerners waiting to tap the ball in behind him. Risty also put in a blinding save on his debut when he was alert to the danger and dive at the feet of the Real Northern attacker.

Real Northern did pull a goal back with 5 mins to go from the penalty spot. It looked really innocuous from the sideline and I thought Senor Lennon had been conned. However, the skipper later confirmed it was a pen and we saw Real Nothern set up a tense finish by sending it home.

Thankfully there was too little time for them to attack again and the whistle blew on a well deserved win.

MOM was Matt Wright for a stellar performance, all action performance in midfield.
