Match Report - 19 Apr 2015, Clapham Rovers Clapham Rovers beat FC Selchp
Rovers!
And so we move onto the final game of the season. The title has gone but we can hold our heads high after a great season in a higher league. Let’s go out with a BANG by gaining revenge against FC Lonsdale who somehow held us to a 3-3 draw.
Rovers 2 – 1 FC Selchp
This victory had to rank as one of my proudest as Rovers Gaffer. Spirit, determination, graft, it was all there. As long as we’re always prepared to roll up our sleeves, never give up and play as a team, we’ll always be in with a shout of winning any football match. We can be champions next season. No doubt about it.
We went ahead somewhat against the run of play, with an og from Selchp. With our height, we once again caused panic in the box. From a deep free kick, a Selchp defender rose, and with a head like a 50p, looped the ball over his own keeper.
FC Selchp put us under pressure throughout the first half by breaking skilfully in wide areas and centre midfield before looking to play the ball in behind our full backs. This tactic had led to myself being swapped from left back to right back as their right winger was giving me a roasting.
They had a small and nippy centre midfielder who was the chief tormenter in the first 30 minutes but he was steadily cut down to size and neutered as Rovers swarmed all over him and either stuck in a few reducers or didn’t let him settle into the game.
FC Selchp disappointingly equalised just before halftime when we looked to have weathered the storm. We got ourselves into a bit of a muddle trying to clear the ball from the edge of the box and the ball fell to a Selchp attacker who struck the ball in at the near post.
The 2nd half we really showed our mettle. We struggled to play any football on the bobbly, dusty pitch and instead we just matched Selchp physically and tried to hit them on the break. We were putting everything into it and there were some tasty tackles flying in.
The winner came from Shaun who epitomised the spirit shown and never-say-die attitude by putting in a monster of a tackle on the edge of the box to dispossess a FC Selchp defender. The defender had received a goal kick and took his time, not counting on Shaun bearing down on him. Shaun sensed the hesitancy, nipped in to nick it and Bunman was onto it in a flash to ram the ball into the far corner of the net.
The last few minutes saw us hanging on but we deservedly took the points. The game did end on a sour note however. A dreadful tackle on Matt Wright was then followed up by some Selchp afters who took exception to our objections about such a poor challenge. That’s Selchp though eh. It made the victory all the sweeter.
