Match Report - 15 Feb 2015, Clapham Rovers Clapham Rovers beat Kings United

Rovers!

Sunday was a truly magnificent day. We all enjoyed that result.

This Sunday is another game though. Loko are tough opponents and will give us a game. Let's not underestimate them. We must keep the run going!

Rovers 4 - 3 Kings Utd

To pre warn you, this in one of my back to front match reports.

As Shaun slotted the ball in with his leg peg, to seal his perfect hat trick and put us 4-1 up with 30 mins to go, I considered the match settled. We were absolutely cruising and it was a question of how many more we would get.

Then pandemonium set in and the match descended into the most nail biting Rovers match i've ever experienced.

We had started the game relatively well. We showed little of the nerves that can come with big games, created some chances and get stuck into the Kings Utd side. It was a feisty old encounter and their number 7 lashed out at Smudger after he'd been sandwiched between a few Rovers.

From the resultant freekick, the ref having ignored the Kings Utd petulance, we went 1-0 down, somewhat against the run of play. To give them their dues, the ball in was aching to be headed in. From our left hand side, their same number 7, curled in a cross in the space between Danny and our defenders on the 6 yard box. Their midfielder lept like a salmon and powered the ball in with a bullet header.

To our credit, we didn't panic at going 1-0 down and immediately put the pressure back on. We had some decent joy down the left hand side with Matt linking up well with Shaun.

Since we played Kings Utd for the first time this season, I've always considered them to be susceptible to an error at the back. There were a few false alarms as they struggled to clear their lines and hacked the ball clear before we could take advantage.

It was from one such rick that Shaun punished them to put us a level at 1-1 and not a stumble in sight.

At 1-1 the game was still no less tasty. We had their skipper trying a bit of afters with Matt Wright and pushing him on the chest. There was no threat of r@pe though.

With their beast up front tightly shackled, Kings were reduced to shots from distance and trying to make inroad down our flanks.

Throughout the half we had also been treated to 'Pipecleaner Legs' shouting non-sensical things from the touchline.

He shut up straight after we went 2-1 up in hilarious fashion. As Horse looked to ping a ball in from the halfway line from a free kick, Pipecleaner Legs was stood right behind him and subjecting him to this sparkling banter.

The exchange went like this.

Pipecleaner Legs: Look at his rainbow laces. You’re gay.

Horse: You’re really fit.

Pipecleaner Legs: Watch out there’s a bit of grass there.

Horse then plays a peach of a ball into the centre of the Kings Utd box, Shaun rises like a champion gazelle and with a back header, flicks the ball over the onrushing keeper and into the net.

As the Rovers celebrate, Horse turns around and blows Pipecleaner legs a big kiss.....and Pipecleaner Legs shuts the fcuk up for the rest of the game. With the laughs of derision of both sets of supporters ringing in his ears.

This 2nd goal signalled the end of the 1st half and beside the Kings Utd opener, I couldn’t have been happier. I knew that we could go up at least 3 gears whilst Kings were playing at the peak of their powers.

We could not have started the 2nd half any better. Two goals came in quick succession.

Straight from the kick off, Lunny played a 1-2 with Matt Wright before playing a 1-2 with Shaun. Quick as a flash, we’re on the edge of the Kings 6 yard box. Lunny then looked up and played in Smudger at the far post who side footed it in. 3-1.

Almost straight away, we then went 4-1 up. Bunny picked the ball up in front of the back 4, laid it off to Matt Wright who played a defence splitting pass to find Shaun in the clear. He lashed the ball in with his left to make 4-1. Game over I thought. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

It all started with carbon copy of the 4th goal. Shaun was once again played in on the edge of the box and as he turned to shoot he was unceremoniously brought down by a Kings Utd defender. In the Premier League it would be a stonewall sending off. Shaun was through on goal and although there was a defender 10 yards away, he was not in a covering position. As this is Sunday League, I was not surprised though when the ref only handed out a yellow. I have yet to see an offence like that punished with a red.

It was therefore extremely galling to subsequently see G sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity.

As we pushed up for a corner we found ourselves exposed at the back when their beast of a striker broke free and ran almost the length of the field. With G in hot pursuit, their striker entered the box, and cut straight across G. As he cut across G, G had nowhere else to go, contact was made and the ref gave a pen. He then sent G off for his troubles. Such a pi55er considering the yellow he had handed out to a Kings Utd player not 5 minutes earlier.

Danny made a superb double save from the pen, but he couldn’t keep out the 3rd attempt as the surrounding Rovers didn’t react quick enough.

We were then reduced to 9 men when Smudger received a 2nd booking for kicking the ball away. The game had continued to be a bit tasty with tackles flying in and also the ref had decided that he would start arbitrating the offside decisions despite being nowhere near up with play. The frustration go to Smudge and after play was stopped for a throw in (when the ball hand’t gone out and the lino had flagged for handball) he humped the ball away, turned round and found the ref brandishing the red card.

The last 15 minutes with 9 men were pandemonium.

We had our backs to the wall and within 2 minutes of going down to 9 men, Kings Utd scored to make it 4-3. Disappointingly we had conceded direct from our own corner again. They broke quickly and once they reached our box, someone was on hand in our left back position to slot the ball home. Good goal to be honest.

We still made forays into their half but the last minutes were spent hacking the ball clear in any way we could.

Thankfully the ref eventually blew the whistle and we took the 3 points. It was an heroic performance.

MOM. Shaun took the plaudits for his perfect hat trick.
