Match Report - 25 Jan 2015, Clapham Rovers Clapham Rovers beat Cool Oak Rangers

Rovers!

This is the final game before we have a break for Carswell’s 30 th birthday on Saturday 7 th February. We’re having an all day booze up in the Alexandra in Clapham. There will be no game the following day.

Let’s therefore go out with a bang before the break and not take Lonsdale lightly. Kings Utd have drawn with Lonsdale this season so use that as extra motivation if you need to. We are Clapham Rovers. We play to win!

Rovers 2 – 1 Cool Oak Rangers

At 60 minutes Bunny had made it 2-0 and as far as I was concerned, that was game over. Bunny’s near post run and flicked header from Godders’s corner, whizzed past the keeper and rewarded us for all our endeavour.

5 minutes later we unfortunately lost Nath to an ankle injury and spurned a golden chance to make it 3-nil with the Cool Oak Rangers defence all at sea. That would’ve really sealed it and signified the dominance we had shown up until then.

Instead we found ourselves hanging on for the last 20 minutes as G unfortunately shanked the ball into our own net as the ball bobbled into the box through a raft of bodies.

Credit to Cool Oak Rangers, they really put us under pressure in the final stages, not through any particularly razor sharp play but by lobbing the ball into the box and pressing us into our own half as we struggled to retain possession.

They proved an obstinate opposition who, despite not being willing to do the dirty stuff and fly into challenges like we did, got the ball forward quickly and exploited the space behind full backs. Cool Oak Rangers will have a big say in the league this year and I will not be surprised if they take points off Kings, St George, Schlep et al. This was therefore a great 3 points for us.

It was from Smudger exploiting the space behind the left full back that we took the lead. Dummying the ball between his legs on the halfway line and running onto it, Smudger cut back from the byline and rolled the ball across to Shaun who dispatched the ball home despite appearing to almost stumble. It was a wonderful goal.

Carswell then had a goal ruled out for offside as headed the ball in from a free kick. It was a dubious decision but after the ‘goal that never was’ from last week, we probably can’t moan at more marginal decisions.

Putting all our chances together though, it therefore would have been a travesty had we not got the 3 points and i’m really pleased at the tenacity and bravery that we showed to close out the match.

No one showed that more than Danny Pybus who pulled off an unbelievable save with 2 minutes to go. Probably the best save I’ve ever seen at Sunday League in fact.

Once again, the cross came into the box and bobbled through a raft of players. G cleared the ball but only as far as a Cool Oak Ranger just outside the 6 yard box. Their player got a decent connection but somehow Pybus got down to his right and it took an absolute slow motion age for the ball to loop around the post. The primeval screams which met the save were a sight to behold.

What made it doubly satisfying was the fact the Kings Utd players had finished their match and were watching from behind the net . The resulting corner came to nothing and the game was won!

For those who weren’t there to Pybus’s save, please see the recording below.

For the save Pybus was named MOM.
