Match Report
Match Report - 05 Oct 2014, Clapham Rovers Clapham Rovers beat Parthenope
Rovers!
This Sunday sees us play Real Northern ‘A’ in the 2 nd leg of the Gladys Perry Cup. We’re 4-1 down from the 1 st leg so the pressure is off us. Let’s just play our game and be confident that we can overturn the deficit. They were lucky in the 1 st leg. We can beat them and beat them well.
This could go to extra time so kick off is 10am.
Rovers 4 – 0 Parthenope
4 first half goals, a clean sheet and playing in brilliant sunshine, Sunday League doesn’t get much more enjoyable. We dominated a poor Parthenope from start to finish, knocked the ball around with confidence, aplomb, and dare I say panache, on our way to the 3 points.
The opening goal was scored by Godders and capitalised on some poor goalkeeping, the type of goalkeeping seen at the Chris Kew School of Goalkeeping. Not to take anything away from Godders though. Godders strode purposely into the box, had a decent shot which the keeper couldn’t hold and followed up on the rebound.
From a personal point of view I was then exceedingly happy for the keeper’s Teflon fingers as he contributed directly to my first assist of the season. Joe and myself were having a jolly old time up and down the flanks as we looked to exploit the space in front of us. From one of my first half forays I was able to cross the ball into the box, the keeper leapt like a salmon to pluck the ball in the air and promptly dropped the ball to Bunman who was following in.
Conceding a goal from my cross proved far too much for the keeper and he swapped positions and played outfield.
The 3 rd goal was an absolute screamer from Skipper Nath. Joe once again made a foray down the left and instead of hitting the byline, laid the ball inside to Nath who was about 5 yards outside the box. He hammered the ball down the centre of the goal a la Thierry Henry at Highbury vs Man Utd in 2006 and it dipped and swerved over the keeper down the centre of the goal. A wonderful strike.
I then claimed my 2 nd assist of the day when I encouraged Carswell to go up for a corner. Seriously though, it was a great header from Carswell and nice to see us score from a corner. The corner dropped right on his head and as he ghosted into the box. 4-0!
The second half was not too much different from the first. We had most of the play and pressure but perhaps didn’t get as much penetration down the flanks.
Joe put in a very tidy performance at left back and there was some great link up play between Joe and Godders up top. What pleased me most about the performance was the hunger to win back the ball once we had lost it. At 4-0 up we could’ve taken our foot off the gas but we didn’t. It was must’ve been really intoxicating because we saw a real collectors’ item on 70 minutes; A Chris Godwin slide tackle. He slid to win the ball and when he broke free, challenged the Parthenope player again for the ball back and set up another attack.
We should really have scored at least once more in the 2 nd half but after Parthenope’s limp wristed first half performance it’s not surprise they showed a bit more back bone in the 2 nd. Indeed they nearly bagged themselves a goal with a great free kick. The same player who scored a 35 yard screamer in the 2012/13 season to seal an unlikely win against us stepped up and hit the bar from about 25 yards. Thankfully it bounced out to safety and we secured the first clean sheet in the SSSL Senior Amateur Division this season.
M.O.M Me, Kewballs, for what in my mind’s eye is a series of marauding runs down the right hand side which made Parthenope weep and give me the moniker; Ronaldo.
