Match Report - 03 Feb 2013, Clapham Rovers Clapham Rovers beat Wig Army
Rovers!
The league table is finally beginning to take shape. We’re hitting a run of form at the right time and we mustn’t let up. Saturday vs London Rhinos is a big game. 3 more points please.
Rovers 2 – 1 Wig Army
The scoreline doesn’t really do Sunday’s performance justice.
We pretty much dominated the game from start to finish and only had to dig deep right at the end when tiredness began to show and Wig Army started an onslaught.
With G the Carlos Puyol man mountain at the back, the rest of the Rovers squad resembled the diminutive stature of the Barcelona squad in height and in the football we played. Our ball retention was the best it has been for a while and we patiently stroked the ball around when a killer pass wasn’t on.
We should’ve perhaps had more shots and scored more but in truth we were quite comfortable so the urgency wasn’t there. In saying that, there were a few hairy moments and we’ll have to show more killer instinct in future to kill teams off.
Howard opened the scoring after a pressure from Godders distracted the defender and the ball looped into the air and allowed Howard to volley in from the edge of the box.
Our second goal took a while coming but when it did it was a beauty. 20 minutes into the second half, Adam, making his debut up top, saw the keeper off his line and chipped the keeper from outside the box.
I fancied a bit of that so after a jinking, lung bursting run (10 yards of running is quite a distance these days) I too saw the keeper off his line and had a dig from 30 yards. How many of you would be surprised if I then told you that as I bought my foot back, I slipped and then scuffed the shot along the floor and out for a goalkick? No one I imagine.
Wig Army then started their onslaught by bringing on the danger to low flying aircraft, spectators and dog walkers that is…. JEFF. Of course all his shots went horribly wide, of course he snatched embarrassment from the jaws of glory in every moment he was on the pitch but his pace was dangerous and stretched the game and tired legs.
Pressure from JEFF down the flanks lead to the ball finding it’s way to his Wig Army strike partner who stroked home from the middle of the box.
The remaining 15 minutes saw us under aerial bombardment which with the lack of height in the team, put us under pressure. We held on however and continued the great run of being unbeaten in 8.
MOM. Chris Phillipson had an absolute stormer at centre half. A reluctant volunteer for the vacant defensive spot, he brought the ball out of defence to start attacks, won the ball cleanly in the air and got stuck in when he needed to. The only blot on the copy book was a half volley back at Danny in the nets from about 30 yards which whizzed out for a corner instead of a cultured pass back. In fairness I think he was reminding me that he’s got a decent shot on him and that he’d like a run out up top rather than at the back.
