Match Report - 06 Mar 2011, Clapham Rovers Clapham Rovers beat FC Lonsdale
Hello fellas.
Clapham Rovers 3 FC Lonsdale 2
Sunday saw us produce arguably our best result of the season. It was a triumph for grit, determination and desire which ensured we won our 16th straight game and kept our title challenge on track. FC Lonsdale were perhaps our toughest opponents of the season and we'll have to be at our best to beat them we meet them again in April.
I'm glad we had such a tough game because it served as a timely reminder of the work we have left this season. After so many victories, understandably so, a touch of complacency has crept in and I include myself in that for not making sure we have a full squad of 14 for every game. We're not going to be able to just turn up and win matches. We've got a real fight on our hands to be Champions.
A 'no show' meant we started the match with 10 players and we had to drag Jim out of bed (who had only got back from skiing the early Sunday morning,) to fill the breach with 25 minutes gone. Whenever a player doesn't turn up it's very disappointing and I can only appeal to all of you to remember your obligations to each other as team mates to turn up and not let each other down. Had we not won on Sunday our title challenge would've been over. Don't be the person who causes that for everyone else.
Goals
1-0 Simon showed rapier like sharpness to latch onto a scuffed goal kick from the keeper, race 20 yards towards goal and blast the ball into the bottom left hand corner.
2-0 JD hit an absolute screamer of a half volley from 25 yards which flew over the keeper flailing arms and dipped under the bar in the middle of the goal.
2-1 I (playing in the nets) could only deflect a shot from a Lonsdale attacker straight to another Lonsdale player who blasted it past me into the net.
2-2 A long ball over the top saw the Clapham Rovers keeper (me, again) race out of goal for the Lonsdale attacker to nob the ball over me into the net.
3-2 With time ticking away, the ball was worked out towards Aidan on the left hand side of the box who advanced towards the 6 yard box and with all the coolness of an eskimo in an ice cream factory, slipped the ball past the keeper at the front post. GET IN!!!!!!!!!
M.O.M
Full credit must go to Jim for getting out of bed and racing down to the pitch to fill the breach after we only a had a squad of 10 players at kick off. This was particularly impressive as he'd just spent a week on the lash skiing and according to him could 'barely see.'
I thought G was pretty inspirational at the back at times and rallied the troops whenever he could.
However, for pure battling spirit and for making the left back spot his own in recent weeks, I think Miles Birch just about shades the MOM award for this week.
