Match Report - 27 Feb 2011, Clapham Rovers Clapham Rovers beat Simon Ridge
Hello fellas.
Great result on Sunday but we started too sloppily in the first half, giving the ball away too cheaply and then lost our shape for the last 20 minutes of the second half. We haven't won anything yet so let's remain focused and start games properly otherwise we're going to get punished by a team we shouldn't lose to. In saying that, we looked very clinical and when we eventually got into our groove, Simon Ridge were not fit to tie our boots laces.
Bert Gabey Challenge Cup Quarter Final
Clapham Rovers A 7- Simon Ridge 2
In a break from tradition i've got the players themselves to describe their goals this week. A certain poetic licence has been employed in some cases but as one description describes me as 'marauding,' i'm going to stick with them.
1-0 Simon. 'Sexy' dink over the keeper from a Nick Woodward cross intop the near post using the outside of his boot. - In this case the description doesn't quite do the goal justice as it was a great goal poacher's finish which impishly taunted the keeper as the ball looped over his head and nestled into the net.
2-0 Hitman. 'Marauding' right back Kewy played a tidy pass between the centre back and the Hitman lived up to his reputation by taking one touch and hitting it with his left. When the keeper saved it he followed up with his right and tucked it away.
3-0 Simon. After finding space on the right hand side and being kept onside by a errant centre back, Simon raced 20 yards towards goal, ignored the keeper shouting 'You're going to miss it' and struck the ball past him into the right hand corner of the net.
4-0 Hitman. A one on one with the keeper where the Hitman went around him and tucked it away.
5-1 Nick. As the ball dropped from a great height 20 yards out, Woodward displayed great technique to strike the ball on the volley with a thunderous left foot drive. The keeper could only dive helplessly as the ball sailed past him into the net. - An alternative view is that Woodward shinned a bobbler from 15 yards and the keeper, seemingly forgetting that he had arms, allowed the ball to spoon over him and into the net with Simon making sure by following up.
Let the history books record that this was a goal showing decent technique, not the cleanest of connections but a goal to be pleased with all the same.
6-1 Simon. A tap in Hernandez style from a Woodward pass.
7-2 Simon. A great cross field free kick found Dan, who had cleverly spun of the centre back to knock across goal to Simon who tapped in and in doing so kicked the post.
MOM - There were some good performaces out there. Miles, one half of 'The Beast Of Birch' was particulalry strong at left back. Nick Woodward once again supplied the ammo for others with 3 assists and popped up with a goal. However for his 4 goals, the MOM this week was the other half of 'The Beast of Birch,' Simon.
