In a week of big money transfers, it is fair to say that Clapham Rover’s star striker is simply priceless. After netting a superb hat-trick against fellow title chasers Simon Ridge, Simon Birch has not only continued Rovers’ march towards the top of the table, but also emerged as a genuine threat to perennial goal scorers Dan Harley & Nick Woodwood in the race for the Golden Boot. I believe all 3 are now tied on 11 goals for the season. Two of his strikes (including a first ever header) came before half-time, either side of what some people are calling the ‘save of the century’ from stand in goalkeeper Bunny. Despite literally trying to throw away a goal to the opposition right wing, 2-0 was a fair reflection of the first half performance.
The second-half saw Rovers pick up their game even further, dominating possession and creating a handful of chances. Si’s third was the best of the bunch, bursting through the centre and coolly slotting past the keeper. This was more than an individual performance though as everyone was absolutely fantastic. Special praise must be singled out to G at the back who had his best game in a Clapham shirt by my reckoning, Rob Shields composed performance in CM and Nick’s emergence as chief ‘playmaker’. Great effort all round, more of the same next week please (with the exception of Centre Back Jim’s forays into the right wing position).
